Explore the Castel Sant’Angelo Inside!

The Castel Sant’Angelo inside is a medieval castle and museum located on the Ponte Sant’ Angelo that connects Vatican City to Rome. Constructed between 135 and 139 AD as a tomb for the Roman emperor Hadrian, it was later used as an Apostolic Palace by various Popes.

The castle is still owned by the Vatican and is open to tourists who can visit the upper floors for an entrance fee. A drawbridge connects the castle to the bank of the river Tiber on which it faces. A wide moat surrounds all but the south side of Castel Sant’Angelo, rendering it an island.

The castle was used as a fortress and prison and has also been used as a residence, a treasury, and an archive.

Castel Sant’Angelo is now one of Rome’s most popular attractions, drawing in tourists from all around the world. It’s easy to see why; the Castel offers visitors a glimpse into both the Roman and papal past of the city.

But what makes it so special?

Castel Sant’Angelo inside was originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian in 135 AD. After his death, it was converted into a castle when the popes claimed the structure in the 5th century. The building went through many changes in its time, but some striking features stay true to this day.

The upper level, which is where you’ll find an exhibition of sculptures and models of Ancient Rome; and the third level, which contains a museum of papal art and the roof terrace.

Castel Sant’Angelo is perhaps most famous for its associations with the Archangel Michael. According to legend, Pope Gregory saw a vision of the Archangel in 590 AD, instructing him to build a church on the spot where he appeared. The church was built, and the Castel Sant’Angelo was constructed around it.

Visitors can enjoy beautiful views of Rome from the upper floors, as well as learn about the city’s Roman and papal past. If you’re looking for an interesting glimpse into Rome’s past, Castel Sant’Angelo inside remains a must-see attraction.
