Immerse Yourself While visiting Galleria Borghese

Watching Galleria Borghese, you will be inspired by the ancient art makers.

The original sculptures and paintings in the Borghese Gallery have struggled through three centuries to reach us in their latest form.

Many artworks got shuffled to other parties as acquisitions or losses.

Who was CARDINAL SCIPIO?

The son of Ortensia Borghese – Paolo V’s sister – and Francesco Caffarelli,  who envisioned a new artwork style by making marble statues.

He loved antique sculpture. But Cardinal Scipione was so ambitious that he promoted the creation of such marble groups that rivaled antique works of that past time.

In 1807,  Camillo Borghese sold Napoleon 154 statues, 160 busts, 170 bas-reliefs, 30 columns, and various vases, causing a loss in number to this collection.

By the 1830s, new additions were made to enhance this gallery from recent excavations and works recuperated from various other Borghese residences or dusty cellars.

Cardinal Scipione’s collection of paintings was so remarkable that it got poetically described by Scipione Francucci.

In 1607, the Pope gave the Cardinal 107 paintings confiscated from the painter Giuseppe Cesari, called the Cavalier d’Arpino.

In 1682, part of Olimpia Aldobrandini’s inheritance entered the Borghese collection; it included works from the collections of Cardinal Salviati and Lucrezia d’Este.

In 1827 Prince Camillo bought Correggios’ celebrated Danäe in Paris.

Through such minor precious contributions, the Borghese Gallery got historically enriched.

It is preserved superbly with a soothing garden for a nice walk.
