Castel Sant'Angelo inside was originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian in 135 AD. After his death, it was converted into a castle when the popes claimed the structure in the 5th century. The building went through many changes in its time, but some striking features stay true to this day.
After entering through the drawbridge on Piazza Sant'Angelo, visitors can tour Castel Sant'Angelo on foot or by elevator. There are three different levels to explore: the lower level, where you'll find Roman ruins and two churches; the upper level, which is where you'll find an exhibition of sculptures and models of Ancient Rome; and the third level, which contains a museum of papal art and the roof terrace.
